CrowdTales is opening a funding campaign series, and I will tell you what it is and why– in detail. To do that, let's start from The Origin of CrowdTales.
The Origin of CrowdTales
What is CrowdTales? 🤔
CrowdTales is a web-based continue-the-story online game. Our community players play by writing a story together, turn by turn, in a limited time.
The completed stories? They are “immortalized”, can be shared and reread again. Here’s some of them:

🔭 What's the Main Vision of CrowdTales? 🔭
We want to contribute in increasing world literacy and make positive impact. How? Our simple, specified way: attract people to TRY to write, in a fun way. We can't ultimately make everyone loves to write, but we hope to awaken those who truly do.
🚀 CrowdTales Missions 🚀
To achieve our vision, we have missions to do.

First Code Written 👨🏻💻
I’ve been having a dream of making a startup with relatively new idea. And I’ve been doing that before, but as you might guessed: they all doomed to fail. Some of them failed on market. Some of them even were not finished in development. And one day, after my previous failed startup named TypewritingInk (check it out if you want here!), I got another idea about writing app. The idea was still vague, initially I wanted to make a “Choose Your Own Adventure” multiplayer game, where players go through a story and they vote for the decision to continue the story. I already wrote and designed the concept, but then I found that someone else had tried making it. Then I reminded of a game that continuing a story together with friends, but it was using our voice, and I thought why don’t I try to make it digital? I love the idea because the result of them game could be “immortalized”, and somehow I couldn't find another app with exactly same idea. And after that, the birth of CrowdTales has begun.

First Launch 🚀
The early launch was where I invited my college friends to play (Faris, Irfan, and Adit). Apparently, their reaction was really good and positive. I also felt the fun and thrill that I couldn’t experience if I play alone. I also shared the game to my University’s unofficial (of course) meme account (@dramatelyu). So many people tried it, but it was a disaster: a bug made the game completely unplayable. I felt so bad because the first impression of so many people had gone bad. I fixed it on the same day. After it was fixed, there were still several people who came to play (decreased drastically though) and I accompanied them to play. And again, their reaction was positive. And after that, I was really confident and ready to fight for this game.

Went a Bit Viral 🔥
I tried to make a TikTok and Instagram account and posted some posts there. The first posts didn’t give good engagement, but then one of TikTok posts got thousands of views and likes, and a lot of players started flooding in. But I think I was just lucky, because after that not any single post went viral again. And the flood was temporary, it slowly decreased. Anyway, it produced a lot of stories and game sessions, which then gave a lot of feedback. From there, I began improving CrowdTales according to users feedback.

Recruited First Partner 🤝
I began to realize that I need a partner to develop CrowdTales further. There is a saying, “if you want to go fast, do it alone. But if you want to go far, do it together” and I lively proofed that. I felt I couldn’t do anything anymore by myself only, I’ve done everything I could and it’s as far as I could. I felt reaching an end of a tunnel (and no way out lol). So I started to recruit a partner. But because I was still in college and got no job, I didn’t pay them with money. We made an agreement that I will pay them with stock shares after some time and if I got a profit I’ll share them in some percentage. However, that schema didn’t last long. I was still learning leadership back then, and I wasn’t firm and I loosen the rules too much. It made the progress stagnant and slow. I felt I couldn’t push them much because I didn’t even pay them and there was no profit at all, so I ended it.

Second Recruitment Attempt 🤜🤛
I tried to recruit someone again, also with similar agreement, and as you might already guessed, it failed again. I have tried to be more firm, but again I think my partner didn’t have real, instant motivation that can push them.

THIRD Recruitment Attempt 💪😤
In the early 2024, I got a job, and could make some money. In the mid year, I decided to recruit someone again, and I have a thought: this time I will pay them!! However, I couldn’t pay them much. It was low because I also couldn’t afford much (it was my first job with low salary). But I also put some similar agreement like before: stock shares and profit share. I thought it will be enough motivation for them. But apparently, it’s not enough. I failed again. I realized the schema I gave to my partners were not ideal. Agreements like that will likely work if the founders start together. In my case, I started it first and own everything from the start, then welcoming other founders. It made me feel too anxious to give shares to others. And my partners didn’t really feel owning the company nor having determination to work hard and sacrifice (no instant profit). Hence, I decided to never do similar way again. I wanted to get an investor, but with years of developing and fighting for it, I already feel of CrowdTales as my own child. I don’t really like to share it with someone else. Hence here I am, opening a funding campaign.

Independent Funding Campaign 📣
Some of you might ask why I don’t start funding campaign on Kickstarter or Indiegogo. The answer is they don’t allow me to. I’m Indonesian and apparently Indonesian can’t start a campaign on both of them. I need overseas Bank or registered overseas company. Hence, my final thought is to create an independent funding.
Current Progress 📊
Proudly, CrowdTales currently has:
28 Story Languages
5000+ Writers
1800+ Stories
Funding Campaign Series
In summary, we are a startup with BIG dream that's willing to grow and give positive impact, but limited in resources. Hence we have an idea of this campaign series, where we invite our users to grow together in a fun way, and honor the funder in a unique way: we make them become a "character" of our story.
We plan to create multiple chapters (campaigns), just like a novel, starts with this–The Prologue: Founding Believers. Every chapter will have different purposes and give different rewards.
The Prologue: Founding Believers
This will be our first funding campaign, a continuation after The Origin. The name implies that the funders of this campaign will be the founding believers–the early people who believe in us, who dare enough to take a step, who will contribute to the creation of our foundation.
The Purpose
As mentioned before, every chapter (campaign) will have different purpose. As of this prologue, the purpose is to create the foundation: hiring people, create system, design community, etc.
1) Hire Great People & Develop a Superteam 🧑💻🏋️♀️🧙
People are the greatest asset in a company, hence I want to create a strong-bonded team, well treated, fun & flexible but also professional. The positions I'm going to probably hire first are:
Head of Community Ecosystem. A person who is responsible in making active community ecosystem. I want our community is living on an ecosystem where we accommodatemembers' activities with recurring events, big events, subcommunities (like story niches), editor's picks, etc., hence our members can channel their writings easily without being confused of what to write and what to do.
Head of Community. A person who is responsible in running a secure & supportive community. He/she will make sure the content of our community is safe and friendly. He/she will also appreciate the good published stories by choosing stories to be shouted out.
Head of Marketing A person who is responsible to attract people to play.
Head of Business A person who is responsible to monetize our game to create income so we can stand independently.
Head of Product A person who manages the developers, graphic designers, and UI/UX designers.
2) Focus on Making Active, Secure, & Supportive Community and its Ecosystem 🌱🌻
I believe the heart of any User Generated Content (UGC) platform is their users. By focusing the community that accommodates the users, I believe it will impact other aspects ultimately, whether it's business, engagements, public awareness, etc. I also plan to make this ecosystem as our tool to achieve our missions. By gathering feedback from players, we can improve our gameplay to make writing more fun. My plan of the ecosystem is offline events, which could be used to hold educative events to contribute positive impact in literacy.
3) Build Sustainable, Profitable Business Strategy 💼
CrowdTales needs to be able to stand by its own self without keep doing funding campaigns. Hence making a sustainable business strategy will be our second priority.
CrowdTales Evolution 🧬
I didn't sit still and do nothing in the span of almost four years. CrowdTales has undergone various developments and refinements based on player feedbacks.
Removed Max Turns
In initial version of CrowdTales, the number of turns is limited in each game sessions. Hence when the limit was reached, the story automatically ends. This caused a lot of stories ended incomplete, while there were still potential to the story. Hence we removed this limitation.
Added Story Examples
We realized that it's kind of hard to decide a story title and plot at first, especially when we are given with blank canvas. Hence we made story examples feature to give inspirations to our players.
Rebranding
The initial branding of CrowdTales is completely subjective and based on my personal preferences. It also had no clear and strong direction. In last year, I rebranded it with my old partner, Thoriq Aziz, resulting what you see now. You can see the difference is huge.
Added One Word Mode
I played several sessions with my friends, and found that some people felt confused what to write. To reduce the pressure, I made a shorter gameplay pace, with players just need to continue word by word.
Added Word Suggestion
Related to previous feature, this word suggestion feature also tries to help our players to continue the story by giving suggestions of the next word.
Added NPCs
This feature actually was recommended by my friend, Mas Kevin, in the initial launch of CrowdTales. However, at the time I felt it was impossible to create such feature, until AI technology started to be more advanced and accessible. I still couldn't believe that this feature is here now.
Thank You, Even for Visiting 😊💫
Thank you, even if you don't decide to purchase the rewards, your visit, your playing, your story, mean a lot to me. I'm always happy to read the stories of my users. I often laughed, almost every time I saw the new ones! That alone, enough to make me keep moving forward. Tatakae! I mean, thank you!
